Mathematics, rightly viewed, possesses not only truth, but supreme beauty.

Bertrand Russell

The Study of Mathematics: Philosophical Essays

As I have said before, I am no math wizard. But I can appreciate the beautiful art created by fractals. Fractals are, in my poor non-mathematical terminology, math equations that are nearly repeated endlessly creating  beautiful patterns. It’s the repetition found in nature. It’s the order, in that which is seemingly chaotic. You can google the word fractal if you want to know more.

What started this was a PBS program on fractals and fractal geometry that I happened to catch around 3 or 4 am the other day/night. I was not able to sleep because of my wheezing and congestion so I was channel surfing when I found the program. I caught the relevance that fractals would have on art right away.

Some of the fractal art on the internet is quite beautiful. I am particularly drawn to the zen-like rightness of fractal “art”. By zen-like I mean a sense of completion, balance, an encompassing of all in a harmonious whole. Since seeing the program, I have been wondering how to produce that sense of harmonious whole in a knitted piece that could be worn, rather than used like a tapesty or quilt.

On other fronts: My knitting goes on. I am almost done with the adult small version of the Autumn Lace sock. I think I may want a test knitter to test knit the adult medium version. If anyone is interested in test knitting the sock’s adult medium version (size 7.5-8) let me know. You will get a copy of the pattern for all 3 sizes for free.

My wheezing and congestion continues. My health insurance company finally approved a CT scan of my sinuses. CT scan showed sinus problems. So next week it’s finding an ENT doctor that my health insurance company will approve. Later this week Dakota has her operation; my poor little fur baby. One health disaster at a time, please.
